Mountain Gorilla numbers now exceed 1.000

BWINDI AND VIRUNGA GORILLA CENSUS PUTS LATEST NUMBERS BEYOND 1.000

(Posted 01st June 2018)

Data released yesterday from the last census carried out in 2016 show a marked increase in gorilla number across Bwindi and the Virungas in both Rwanda and Congo.
Over 1.000 gorillas were counted at the time and given that two more years have since passed are these numbers thought to be even higher today.
Mountain gorillas however remain an endangered species and require special protection, in particular in the Virunga National Park in Congo which more often than not resembles a war zone with militias battling it out among themselves as well as with the Congolese national army and UN peacekeepers over control of the priceless mineral resources found inside and outside the park.
Added information about the mountain gorillas in Uganda’s two dedicated national parks, Mt. Mgahinga and Bwindi, which are now thought to be home to more than half of the overall gorilla population in the region, can be found via www.ugandawildlife.org or by clicking on www.visituganda.com
