NEW CREOLE LANGUAGE AND CULTURE RESEARCH INSTITUTE LAUNCHED IN VICTORIA

Besides the International Institute Kreol, aka ‘Lenstiti Kreol Enternasyonal‘ is Seychelles now also home to a second major institution focused entirely on the study of the Creole language and culture.
Opened earlier in the week as part of the 2016 edition of the annual ‘Festival Kreol‘ is the new Institute at Anse Royale part of the Faculty of Arts and Social Development of the University of Seychelles. Sister universities in Reunion and Mauritius have already expressed keen interest to become part of the research activities which are now being defined by institute personnel.
Creole is the universal language of the Seychelles where however French and English are also widely spoken.
The Creole language is largely rooted in French but has developed distinct hallmarks and is now found, in various dialects, across other Indian Ocean countries off the African mainland but also in Haiti and others of the Caribbean islands and parts of the Southern United States.
‘Lenstiti Kreol Enternasyonal‘ was renamed three years ago during the Festival Kreol to embrace the international nature of the Creole culture and heritage, but was originally launched already in 1986 at its present location in Au Cap.
