RHINO BIRTH MAKES BREAKING NEWS

(Posted 26th August 2017)

Two hours ago was another rhino baby born on the Rhino Fund Uganda / Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, bringing the overall number to 21 which include 9 females, 11 males and the latest addition, sex still to be determined by the monitoring team.Notably is the mother one of the Ziwa born females, 5 1/2 year old Laloyo who gave birth to her first calf. Moja, the father of the youngborn, in contrast was brought to Ziwa from abroad when the breeding programme started and is now 17 years old.
According to Rhino Fund Uganda / Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary Executive Director Angie Genade are at least three births expected in 2018, further raising the number of rhinos visitors can see when on safari in Uganda.
The breeding programme on Ziwa is enjoying one of the fastest if not the fastest reproduction rates on record with births by the original females taking place every 2 1/2 years in average, way beyond what other breeding programmes report.

The birth will also give a boost to promoting Uganda as a big five destination in Eastern Africa and as Ziwa is strategically located between Kampala and Murchison Falls National Park, every tourist has the opportunity to stop over on Ziwa – entrance is free but rhino tracking attracts a donation to the sanctuary – or book an overnight stay at the single upmarket lodge, Amuka Safari Lodge.
