Sabah illegal logging at lowest (NA comment: Seeing as this is a claim made by the forestry department, we are inclined not to believe it.) http://www.dailyexpress.com.my/news.cfm?NewsID=92626

While we were definitely no fan of the author while he worked for the CITES Secretariat, and we feel this book, is very self-indulgent and politically correct, it does provide readers with an insight into why and how the CITES Convention was even back then, flagrantly abused by countless countries. The lack of enforcement then and now by CITES was and remains a big part of the problem.

Nothing learnt from past mistakes and nothing seems to has changed – as we can see from the many countries still breaking the Convention with relentless monotony. Corruption among CITES MA’s was and still is – rampant, making a mockery of the Secretariat and Standing Committee.

Think about this: If you drove your car recklessly day in day out, breaking speed limits with immunity, would you be more likely to continue breaking the law or comply with it? The CITES Standing Committee needs to enforce sanctions – IF it is serious about tackling the illegal wildlife trade. http://www.whittlespublishing.com/The_UNs_Lone_Ranger
