One of the largest mass elephant slaughters in decades took place in Bouba Ndjidah National Park, Cameroon, in 2012. Armed with grenades and AK-47s, poachers killed more than 300.

A mother’s tender care: Incredible pictures show a female silverback gorilla nurturing its baby in the rainforest of Congo

Ten wild-caught baby gorillas euthanised in China having been considered a disease risk.

To obtain the baby gorillas, poachers will have killed about 80 adult gorillas. All because the CHINESE CITES MA approved and allowed these importations without making some very obvious, basic checks and enquiries first.

A more blatant example of CITES MA complicity in the illegal wildlife trade would be hard to find. The Secretariat has tried to explain away this ‘oversight’, but any objective observer can see through the excuses. Predictably, China has been let off the hook, again, by the Secretariat and Standing Committee….China always is, isn’t it?

MALAYSIA: Is CORRUPTION & MALADMINISTRATION the cause of Zoo Negara’s decline?

extract: However, things have taken a turn for the worse. Today, visitors to the zoo will be disappointed to find a sorry state of animal welfare, as documented in a report by online portal The Ant Daily earlier this year, which detailed how animals were kept in small and muddy enclosures, seemingly undernourished and uncared for.

This zoo is a member of the Malaysian Association of Zoological Parks and Aquaria (MAZPA). How it can remain a member is

something we will watch out for. Same as we will watch MAZPA to see if it will formally and publicly oppose the importation of 24 species of wild-caught animals from SOUTH AFRICA. These animals are destined for Melaka Zoo which is far worse than Negara Zoo. Dozens, if not hundreds of animals have died or disappeared from Zoo Melaka, with the zoo and Perhilitan (doubles as CITES MA) all covering up this disgraceful situation. SOUTH AFRICA – you are sending your animals to a country with a reputation for some of the worst zoos and illegal wildlife trade in SE Asia.
