Animal rights activists fight baby elephant exports. ZIMBABWE extract: LOCAL animal rights campaigners and conservationists will this week stage a demonstration to protest against the planned export of wild elephants to the United Arab Emirates and China.

Parks and Wildlife authorities in the country recently confirmed plans to export at least 62 elephants to top up revenue and help control the ever growing elephant population. The government insisted that there was nothing unusual about the move to export wild animals as Zimbabwe had received allocations from the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species to export elephants to suitable destinations. https://www.newsday.co.zw/2015/02/04/animal-rights-activists-fight-baby-elephant-exports/

Dusit Zoo’s cruel dog shows. THAILAND

February 4, 2015 1:00 am

After an absence of many years I recently returned to visit Dusit Zoo. In general I was impressed with the many improvements made. However, I was deeply shocked and saddened to see the "dog show". This spoiled my visit and otherwise good impression of the zoo.

Painting a dog with stripes to make it look like a tiger and then forcing the terrified-looking animal to walk over bottles and a trapeze-style wire should have no place in a modern zoo. I care for a lot of dogs and can say with some authority that these dog shows are cruel. I have since urged the zoo director to put a stop to them. I travel a great deal and visit many zoos, but never before have I seen anything like these shows.

I’m sure we can all agree that a zoo should be a centre for conservation and education, and not a place for entertainment that victimises the animals.

Both the zoo director and chief vet are aware of my concerns and I hope they will act upon them. Dusit Zoo does not need tacky animal shows to attract visitors.
