Your daily dose of bad news from around the world,

about poaching, wildlife and environmental crimes …

in the spotlight today ……………………

China’s Blood Ivory Carving Factories ( a news report, like most others critical of China, you won’t find on the CITES web site – the secretariat sees to that – but why does it? http://www.cites.org/

extract: "From what I can see, if China and Japan banned the domestic ivory trade today, and enforced it, poaching would start to decline immediately across Africa," says Allan Thornton, Founder of the Environmental Investigation Agency. "This is what happened after the 1989 ivory ban was introduced. Within a few months the trade just plummeted across Asia because the markets were shut down." http://www.huffingtonpost.com/…/eia-chinas-blood-ivory-carv… (NA comment: A Common sense solution which seemingly eludes CITES and EU officials who, like some scientists and NGO’s seem to lack common sense and think the answer is another all-expenses paid conference when, the previous 100 – 500 conferences or more failed to stop the demand for ivory. Whatever happened after the last major conference in London? Illegal wildlife traders must be laughing all the way to their banks.)

CAN YOU IMAGINE THE DIPLOMATIC ROW CHINA WOULD MAKE IF PEOPLE IN AFRICA CREATED A DEMAND FOR GIANT PANDA SKINS, TEETH, NAILS ETC AND WOULD NOT STOP WHEN SIMPLY ASKED TO – EVEN AFTER COUNTLESS CONFERENCES?

THINK ABOUT IT FOR A MOMENT AND YOU WILL SEE THE DOUBLE

STANDARDS PRACTICED BY CHINA AND THEIR ‘POODLES’ IN CITES.
