A weekend dose of bad news about poaching, wildlife and environmental crimes …

in the spotlight today ……………………

CHINA: We are reliably informed by a contact in China, Chimelong Zoo has stopped all shows

involving great apes. Apparently, they were told to stop by ‘someone high up’. We presume

that decision was reached after our public awareness campaign using various posters to show how

the CITES Convention is being abused and broken – especially by CHINA.

Investigators are visiting other zoos in China known to possess and exploit imported apes for commercial reasons which is a breach of the CITES Convention. We will keep you updated.

INDONESIA: JATINEGARA WIDLLIFE MARKET, JAKARTA this week. Indonesia’s wildlife is being wiped out while CITES and local forestry officials look on and do nothing. The thing is, will the CITES Secretariat Enforcement Officer do anything about the illegal wildlife sold here every day – with approval of the Indonesian CITES Management Authority? The same authorities have seen these photos in advance of their publication here.
