JAKARTA/INDONESIA – where illegal wildlife traders operate openly and with impunity. (photos taken this week)

Walking around carrying a Brown Parrot (Cholcopsitta duivenbodei) derived from tropical forests in Papua. The man wants to sell the birds to another trader in Jatinegara market at a price of IDR 1,350,000 or £67.5 pounds. However, traders in the illegal wildlife market at Jatinegara bid too low so bird’s owners took it back home. The Brown Parrot is protected by the Constitution Act No. 5 of 1990 – though, at this and other markets the law is never enforced. Police (BKSDA) are alleged by their superiors (who do nothing to stop it) in the ministry to be bribed not to enforce the law.

SABAH/MALAYSIA. These two bears continue to BE HELD ILLEGALLY not that far from the Sabah Wildlife Department and its apparently impotent minister reside in comfort – if not luxury this weekend. A nearby bear rescue centre is available to accept and care for the bears, but first they MUST be confiscated.

The minister responsible for the bears not being confiscated. What are you thinking?

Are we the cruellest we’ve ever been? The way we treat animals suggests we are. The worst part is that animal suffering is largely avoidable – we’re just too selfish to change our ways.

The following is not sent on behalf of the NGO group concerned. We just thought you might want to see how damned hard it is to be a caring NGO in Indonesia. Five years of hard work destroyed in seconds. If only the Indonesian government cared.

We need your help to repair the damage.

Forest Fires Destroy Years of Replanting Work at FNPF Sites

Sad news came from our Tanjung Puting and Lamandau center in Borneo. A massive forest fire has engulfed and destroyed most of the land that have been under FNPF’s care for more than five years. The combination between prolong drought, peat soils, and strong wind prove to be deadly for the forest there. The fire was slowly growing and moving closer to our land until it was too big to control. With very limited resources and equipment our staff gave everything they had to prevent the fire from spreading further. They did not work alone, they had the help of the local villagers and local government. Their efforts were to protect the rest of the forest, against an almost impossible odds.

However, these disasters have not diminished the determination of conservationists to recreate the forests that have been lost to logging and land-clearing, as Bayu Wirayudha, Director and Founder of FNPF explains.

“ Yes, this is a disaster, but we have no alternative but to restart the replanting process again in those areas where our saplings have been lost.
