Keeping up with 133 black rhinos

21 rhinos were ‘ear-notched’ in October, in collaboration with the Kenya Wildlife Service. Marking rhinos with a unique cut pattern in their ears makes it easy for rangers to identify shy or fast-moving individuals in thick bush, and enables more efficient monitoring.

Omaze winners on Ol Pejeta

Earlier this year, we launched an online campaign with Omaze, where two lucky donors would win the opportunity of a lifetime to travel to Ol Pejeta with renowned National Geographic photographer Ami Vitale. This month we had the pleasure of hosting those lucky winners – Natalie Arnold and Pieter Smits. Over the five-day trip they were able to go on game drives, meet the last two northern white rhinos in world Fatu and Najin, track lions, meet some of the communities we work with, and of course spend time with Ami Vitale.

Tigithi community receives grant from the USA Embassy to Kenya

Access to water remains one of the biggest challenges to wellbeing and livelihoods in this semi-arid part of Kenya. Ol Pejeta have a dedicated water and agriculture team that looks for ways to support communities with water access, and recently won a US$7,000 grant from the US Embassy to Kenya to complete the piping for a water source in Tigithi.

The grant was officially signed on the 17th of October in a ceremony attended by the US Ambassador to Kenya, Kyle McCarter, Ol Pejeta representatives, the chairperson of the Tigithi Water and Sanitation Team and over 250 community members. This grant will enable around 1,400 households to have access to clean water.

Education beyond borders

Two team members from Ol Pejeta’s Education Team were sponsored by the Rotary Club of Lilongwe to go to Malawi last month. Their task was to train teachers on the use of a transformative learning tool.

Ol Pejeta Conservancy at the World Travel Market Responsible Tourism Awards

‘Outstanding Achievement’ award for Ol Pejeta

At the recent World Travel Market (WTM) Responsible Tourism Awards in London, Ol Pejeta was honoured to receive the Judge’s Award for Outstanding Achievement.

Judges’ Awards, rarely handed out, are for organisations who perform highly in a number of areas and have won multiple awards previously, and who continue to be outstanding. In 2016, Ol Pejeta was awarded Gold for Wildlife Conservation in the Africa Responsible Tourism Awards and came Highly Commended in 2017.
