It’s less than a month until World Rhino Day, on 22nd September, and with CITES CoP17 just around the corner, all of us at Rhino HQ are gearing up for a busy few months. As we reach a crossroads for the future of all five rhino species, we remind ourselves of the vital role that rhinos play in the ecosystem across Africa and Asia and examine the worrying growth in Zimbabwe’s escalating poaching scene. Poachers arrested in Zimbabwe

More than a dozen alleged poachers, including the nephew of a prominent MP, have been arrested by the Zimbabwean authorities in connection with poaching incidents across the Save and Bubye Valley, where our partner, the Lowveld Rhino Trust, monitors two important black rhino populations.

Debate: Legalise the horn trade?

On 03 August, John Hume, South Africa’s largest private rhino breeder, and Born Free President and CEO, Will Travers, held a lively debate on the thorny issue of legalising the international trade in rhino horn. At the beginning of the evening, 30% were for trade, 62% against and 8% undecided. By the end of the debate, the figures were 39% for, 60% against and 2% undecided.

Equestrians complete Mongol Derby
Huge congratulations to Tatiana and Venetia for completing the Mongol Derby, one of the longest horse races on earth, finishing an incredible fifth and sixth place. The equestrian duo have raised more than £19,000 for Africa’s courageous wildlife rangers.
