FLIGHTS SUSPENDED AS TICKET SALES CANNOT BE REPATRIATED FROM ZIMBABWE TO ZAMBIA

(Posted 24th January 2019)

Information has come to light that Proflight, Zambia’s largest airline, will be halting flights from Lusaka to Harare effective 29th of January.
While no specific reasons could be obtained is it nevertheless understood that both, the present unrest across Zimbabwe prompting less travel demand and, perhaps more important, the lack of foreign exchange in that country.
Many airlines have been struggling to repatriate their ticket sales, some of them outright threatening to halt flights, should they not get forex allocated by the Central Bank in Harare.
Several months ago did President Mnangagwa’s government announce that payments for airlines would be prioritized but given the dire economic situation right now as a result of the unrest, the the reason thereof, is simply not enough foreign exchange available to accomplish this.
Flights are expected to resume in early March but watch this space for final confirmation.
