Reunion celebrates 6th UNESCO World Heritage anniversary

PITONS, RAMPARTS AND HUNDRED OF MILES OF HIKING AND CYCLING PATHS – THAT IS THE CENTRE OF REUNION

On the 01st of August 2010, the Pitons, Cirques and Ramparts of Reunion Island made ??their entry in the list of natural properties inscribed on the World Heritage by UNESCO.
To mark the sixth anniversary of that milestone event has Reunion National Park in partnership with the Estate of Turrets and the Inter-communal Tourist Office of the East, offered a colorful program to celebrate this special anniversary.
Considered to have outstanding heritage value have the Pitons, Cirques and Ramparts of Reunion island joined the list of natural properties inscribed on the World Heritage by UNESCO.
This also coincides with the central area of La Réunion National Park, covering more than 100,000 ha, or 40% of the island’s territory.
The ranking includes two volcanic massifs Piton de la Fournaise, the island’s active volcano and Piton des Neiges, Mafate and the high rock cliffs delimiting the interior space of the island.
Added to that are the Piton of Anchaing in Salazie, Piton de Sucre and Chapel in Cilaos, Great Rowboat in the north of the island and Mare Longue in the south of the island.
A remarkable flora and fauna contribute significantly to the conservation of terrestrial biodiversity of the Mascarene Islands, seen as one of the true biodiversity hotspots around the globe.
To mark the sixth anniversary of the inscription of the Pitons, Cirques and Ramparts of Reunion Island on the World Heritage list UNESCO, the Reunion National Park has planned a week long programme of activities in which tourists as well as locals can participate.
