Reunion’s volcano erupts for the first time in 2016

PITON DE LA FOURNAISE SPITS FIRE AGAIN

(Posted 26th May 2016)

Earlier today did the Piton de la Fournaise, Reunions’ active volcano, begin to shift from sleepy to active again, for the first time this year after days of increased seismic activity.
Last year were at least six eruptions recorded, all spectacular in their own right, drawing thousands of additional visitors to the island to witness the spectacle. The most active eruption lasted a total of 67 days, extremely long for the Piton de la Fournaise as most such spectacles only last for a few days.
Authorities on Reunion, a French island deep in the Indian Ocean between Madagascar and Mauritius, have promptly implemented safety measures by halting access to the volcano’s rim and surrounding plateau, though more distant viewing points remain open for tourists as do helicopter flights continue with the exception of direct overflights.

Later this year, in September, will Reunion be the place to be to see a total eclipse of the sun and more information about adventure holidays on the island can be accessed via www.reunion.fr
