LEADING THE TRAIL IN SUSTAINABLE TOURISM PRACTICES
The rise of eco-travelers has had an unprecedented shift in the tourism industry. More travelers are conscious of the carbon footprint left as a result of their travels and look at a variety of efforts that primarily fall under the 3R’s: Reduce, Reuse and Recycle to determine their hotel of choice. Serena Hotels functions within the fundamental tenets of sustainability that focuses on innovative programs that respond to the needs of the environment, economy and communities in which it operates which are aligned to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. Recently, Serena Hotels Kenya properties underwent a series of reassessments where Lake Elmenteita Serena Camp retained its Gold Eco-Rating Certification for 4 consecutive years following biennial reviews, while Amboseli Serena Camp and Kilaguni Serena Safari Lodge have been upgraded from Silver to Gold Eco-Rating. Gold eco-rating represents the highest level of certification that can be attained by a business as a result of outstanding compliance to adhere to the ecotourism principles. The Ecotourism Kenya Certification program is recognized by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council and is at the same level with other international standards across the globe.
