The North-East Governors’ Forum (NEGF) has raised ?10.8 billion (approximately US$7.1 million) in counterpart funding towards establishing a regional air shuttle, advancing the proposed North_East_Airline.

The announcement by Borno State Governor and Forum Chairman Babagana Zulum came during the Forum’s 10th meeting in Maiduguri. The initiative brings together Adamawa, Bauchi, Borno, Gombe, Taraba and Yobe, with remaining contributions expected by the end of October.

The proposed carrier aims to improve intra-regional connectivity and facilitate passenger and cargo movement, supporting trade, investment, tourism and logistics across the North-East.

The development comes amid growing state involvement in Nigeria’s aviation sector, with state-backed carriers including Ibom Air, Cally Air, Enugu Air, Pioneer Airlines/Bayelsa Air, Gateway Air and Caliphate Air, while other states such as Kano are pursuing airline plans.

The North East Airline will add another dimension to Nigeria’s expanding state-backed aviation landscape, with its operational and commercial model worth watching.
