Officers from the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) in Machakos town have arrested two people found in possession of elephant tusks valued at one point two million Kenya shillings (KSh 1.2M) and weighing 12 kilograms. According to the Wildlife Warden in charge of Machakos Sub-County, Ismael Kiprop, the two suspects were transporting the tusks on a motorcycle, wrapped in foil paper.
The price of ivory quoted in this article is incorrect. The current price for ivory in Africa is estimated to be between $50-$100 per kilo. Overstating the price of ivory incentivises poachers.
