The much loved General Practitioner / Physician (b1940; q1966 MB BS Lond / Barts, MRCP, FRCGP), died from sarcoma on 13 July 2024 and was put to rest in Seychelles yesterday as a large crowd of family, friends and mourners had come together for a final farewell.
Dr. Guy Rene Ah-Moye, a beloved general practitioner and physician, passed away peacefully on 13th July 2024, in the arms of his devoted wife, Marie, after battling metastatic sarcoma.
Of Chinese descent, Dr. Ah-Moye was born in the Seychelles, then a British colony in the Indian Ocean. He spent his childhood immersed in the beauty of the tropics, surrounded by sunshine, sea, fishing, friends, and family. In 1959, he left his idyllic homeland for Southampton, UK, where he attended St. Mary’s College to complete his A-Levels. In 1961, he began his medical studies at St. Bartholomew’s Hospital, London, graduating in 1966.
After qualifying, Dr. Ah-Moye practiced as an internist in the UK and achieved his MRCP. In 1970, he returned to Seychelles, where he pioneered modern treatments for various diseases and significantly improved mental healthcare for both adults and children. As Acting Chief Medical Officer and Medical Director of Victoria Hospital Services in 1977, he played a crucial role in decentralizing healthcare across the Seychelles.
In 1979, for personal and political reasons, Dr. Ah-Moye moved back to London. There, he established a small GP practice in Tulse Hill, transforming it into a thriving inner-city primary medical center with the help of his wife and colleagues. His passion for learning and teaching made him a well-respected GP trainer for decades. Anyone who knew him would remember his enthusiasm for sharing knowledge.
Beyond general practice, Dr. Ah-Moye served as a cardiology assistant at Mayday University Hospital and as Medical Director of SELDOC, an NHS out-of-hours healthcare provider for South London, he was instrumental in expanding SELDOC’s services across South East London. His tireless work also included shifts in the A&E departments at King’s and Mayday hospitals.
Even after retirement, Dr. Ah-Moye continued to contribute to the Seychelles Ministry of Health, focusing on diabetes prevention, hypertension, and public health advocacy. His dedication to patient-centered care and service improvements left a lasting legacy. He was also involved in Seychelles’ University activities, and he cherished time spent in his beloved garden, watching football, and with his growing family.
Dr. Ah-Moye was a staunch advocate for high-quality, free healthcare for all. He passionately supported the NHS and was unafraid to ask difficult questions to ensure the best outcomes for patients. His high morals and ethics earned him the respect of all who knew him. His sense of humour, lifelong love of learning, and unwavering commitment to his patients made him an exemplary role model.
Dr. Guy Rene Ah-Moye is survived by his wife Marie, his four children, and eight grandchildren. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
