Talking about conservation in Rwanda is no empty talk but reflecting the country does walk the talk

RWANDA PLANS TO HAVE A ‘CONVERSATION ABOUT CONSERVATION

(Posted 18th August 2015)

As part of the annual Kwita Izina Festival, during which newborn mountain gorilla babies are named, has the Rwanda Development Board’s tourism and conservation department lined up a series of events for the week prior to the 05th of September, when the naming will take place at the Volcanoes National Park.

Rwanda will use this year’s festival to highlight the country’s achievements in recent years in conservation, not just for gorillas but equally for forests and other ecosystems. Since the last Kwita Izina was a new forest national park created, Gishwati, and a full day conservation symposium will take place in Kigali in early September, discussing the challenges of conservation. ‘Conversation about Conservation’ will bring together experts from the region and beyond to present position papers and discuss national policies in an effort to close gaps which even within the East African Community still exist.

RDB will also, as had become a tradition, host sections of the regional media to show them around the country with visits to the Akagera National Park, into which a lion pride was relocated recently from South Africa, to show what measures the park has taken to safeguard the predators by strengthening the perimeter fence. Other parks on the visiting programme are Nyungwe Forest with a hike to the famous canopy walk, to the shores of Lake Kivu and of course various tourism sites in the vicinity of Musanze, the town nearest to the Volcanoes National Park.
