A new fire has broken out on Mount Kilimanjaro.
According to TANAPA, the fire started in the early hours of Monday, 28th of September 2026, in the Sangarini area near the Kamwanga elevation, moving toward the Shira Plateau on the western side of the mountain (around 3,800 metres above sea level).
A joint team of firefighters, conservation officers, tourism stakeholders and local residents has been sent to contain it. The cause is still unknown and an investigation is underway.
TANAPA says tourism activities, including climbing Kilimanjaro on the official routes, are continuing as normal. With rains beginning in parts of northern Tanzania, authorities hope the fire can be brought under control quickly.
This is the second fire on the mountain in about three weeks. An earlier blaze in early September burned roughly 1,800 hectares before it was contained.
