| Botswana is one of Africa’s premier safari destinations, renowned for its elephant super herds, diverse predators, lush Okavango Delta and sprawling Kalahari Desert. A little over a decade ago, poisoned carcasses were wiping out lions in Botswana’s northern Okavango Delta. In the northern Okavango panhandle, 18,000 elephants share the landscape with a human population of about 16,000. Not long ago, many locals viewed elephants as dangerous pests with no real benefit to the community. Conflict was escalating, crops were being destroyed, and casualties were rising on both sides. |
