The Observatory, located right on the edge of the westernmost arm of the Great African Rift Valley in Rubirizi District, Uganda, has for long been one of this author’s secret hideaways. Together with Will Knocker’s Silole Cottage at the edge of the Nairobi National Park is this duo of favourite getaway locations open for bookings and the addition of new features at the Observatory over the past year has been impressive.
Notwithstanding the current tourism standstill in Uganda has owner Zahid Alam invested to upgrade and expand the property. Last year a new swimming pool and sauna were officially opened, enhancing the enjoyment visitors can have, and with a view second to none of course.
Late last year did work then commence at a new private cottage, set away from the main cottage, which sleeps as many as 6 in comfort. Building progress was halted during the time of the main lockdown in Uganda but has since resumed in full swing and completion is anticipated over the next two months.

The new cottage is more of a private suite and of single storey construction unlike ‘big brother‘ further up on the hill, which is a double storey construction.

From the laying of the foundations as seen here in early March this year has construction advanced a great deal, with the outer work almost complete and in coming weeks concentrating on the interior finish.
The new private cottage will of course have a self contained bedroom but also a small kitchenette, dining and sitting area and an unrivalled, undisturbed view across the valley below with the vista extending from the Maramagambo Forest over Lake Nyamusingire to Lake Edward, the Kazinga Channel, Lake George, the distant Blue Mountains of the Congo and, weather permitting, the sight of the majestic Rwenzori Mountains, aka Mountains of the Moon.

Once completed and ready to inaugurate will another visit make sure that ATCNews readers get the latest updates, impressions and pictures from the new cottage.
