8 things to know about Travel in Kenya in 2020by thefisayo |
Before choosing to write this article, I did a number of research that has established that traveling in 2020 will not be the same as past years.
Also, during my research I realized Kenya and Rwanda announced the resumption of international flights to other East African countries.
This will commence in August 1 2020.
It is not surprising that Kenya seems to be taking quick steps to restart her tourism, being that the tourism sector makes 63% of the country’s GDP.
Now, to the burning 2020 question: is it safe to travel in Kenya?
To answer this, here are a few safety measures Kenya has taken to make it safer for local and international tourists to visit Kenya.
Travel safety measures:
- From August 1st 2020, potential passengers are expected to take COVID-19 test 72 hours before boarding flights to Kigali/Nairobi, and take another test upon arrival.
- Kenya introduced health protocols to guide operations of its tourism and travel sector. This was launched by the country’s Minister of Tourism and Wildlife, Najib Balala on the 1st of July. Click here to download the e-copy.
- The Cabinet Secretary for Tourism and Wildlife Najib Balala officially launched a virtual Safari live stream campaign in June.This is a 6 weeks campaign to showcase game safaris in some of the parks and reserves across the country.
Now to your other questions; is it safe to walk in Nairobi?
This might sound like a strange question to ask, but it is a genuine concern to some.
The answer to this is yes.
I traveled to Kenya for the first time last year, and as I said in one of my YouTube videos, I was super impressed with the security protocols in Nairobi.
Things to note before you visit Kenya
- The weather is different. When I visited Nairobi September last year, it was really cold. However, when I traveled to Ukunda (Diani), I felt like I was in another country.It was super warm.Nairobi was about 16 degree Celsius, while Diani was about 30 degrees Celsius .So prepare for both weathers depending on where you would be exploring in Kenya.
- Visa is on arrival. I paid $50 for visa on arrival.You can watch this video below for more.
3. If you are travelling from Lagos Nigeria to Nairobi Kenya, prepare yourself for a 6 hour flight approximately.
This is if you travel to Kenya on a direct flight using Kenya Airways.

4. Things you need before you visit Kenya: yellow fever card, your international passports and your flight tickets. As mentioned earlier, visa in Kenya is on arrival.

Kenya is a magical and beautiful destination to visit and the country seems prepared to start receiving international tourists again.
