Tourism – more than travel, a driver of Africa’s growth

(Posted 17th October 2026)

Tourism creates opportunities far beyond the visitor experience. Across Africa, it contributes to economic growth, supports millions of jobs and creates markets for local businesses from accommodation and transport to food, crafts and cultural experiences.

Figures from the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) underline the sector’s importance:

US$228 billion contributed to Africa’s economy in 2025 (equivalent to 7% of regional GDP).

5% growth in 2025, outpacing the wider African economy, which grew by 3.5%.

30.2 million jobs supported across the continent in 2025.

US$241 billion in economic contribution and 31.5 million jobs are forecast for 2026.

The potential extends beyond these figures. When tourism development involves local businesses, strengthens skills and creates opportunities for communities, its benefits can reach far beyond the destinations themselves.

For African countries, tourism is not simply about attracting more visitors. It is also about building resilient local economies, creating employment and ensuring that more value stays where it is generated.
