The normally calm and meandering River Rwizi, which makes its way through the town of Mbarara, a key urban centre in the South Western part of Uganda, turned into a raging monster stream yesterday night following an extended downpour of biblical proportions.

It was also reported that part of the fence / wall of the Rwizi Arch Hotel was swept away but reports circulating that the hotel had collapsed were promptly dismissed as fake news. The hotel and other nearby properties and businesses however sustained flooding damage as the river burst its banks.

Other parts of Uganda, including the capital Kampala, also recorded heavy rainfall and unusually low temperatures, leading to flooded roads and streets in several locations across the country.

Emergency services were mobilised in Mbarara to search for people reported missing and other flood related problems. Watch this space for updates as and when available.

It could also be established that contrary to previous suggestions by a source from Mbarara there is no road collapse and traffic to and from Uganda’s South West remains flowing.
