Congo Airways has reportedly spent over 23 Million US Dollars, over the past 2 years but has yet to put a single aircraft into operation.
The Chairman of the Board of the state owned airline reportedly wrote to government complaining about this situation, blaming mismanagement and more on the untenable situation.
In a letter read and addressed to the Minister of Portfolio, Congo Airways’ board chairman accused the airline’s management of committing millions to leasing deals with Allegiance Capital, Jordan Aviation and International Air Leases that all failed, with no aircraft ever put into service. Staff have received only 6 of 20 months’ salary, while rival, Ethiopian Airlines-backed, Air Congo expands steadily. The board wants the DG and Deputy DG removed over alleged gross incompetence.
In 2025, there was already documented chronic mismanagement exposed of the status of the airline and no aircraft have been delivered to Congo Airways. The airline missed its March 2026 deadline for launch. This was after the CNSS could not secure the lease which led the money not to be delivered to Congo Airways.
As of June 2026, Congo Airways, as all other airlines with an AOC issued in the DRC, is banned from flying into the EU
