As reported by ATCNews in October 2017 did the Uganda government cancel the RVR concession following a similar measure by the Kenyan government.
The rail company subsequently took the Ugandan government to the agreed arbitration process in London at the International Arbitration Tribunal and was reportedly ordered to pay nearly 139 million US Dollars in compensation. A counter claim by Uganda over just under US Dollars 104.000 was upheld, a laughable amount which now raises serious questions over the capacity of the legal team which represented the Ugandan government at the London Court of International Arbitration.

The ruling also strengthens previous calls on government not to accept any arbitration clauses in contracts and concession agreements to avoid biased rulings and fall prey to top level international legal teams dismantling weak legal arguments by equally weak locally recruited legal experts.
It is not clear if Kenya’s cancellation of the agreement did have or will have similar consequences and if at all Uganda will pay the award – unpaid amounts accrue an 9 percent interest.
