Africa’s tourism future will be defined not only by infrastructure and investment, but by the people driving the industry. That was the key message from UN Tourism Secretary General Shaikha Al Nuwais during the 69th UN Tourism Regional Commission for Africa meeting in Seychelles.

Addressing tourism ministers and industry leaders, she urged African governments to prioritize skills development, digital and artificial intelligence readiness, and women’s empowerment to build a more competitive, inclusive and resilient tourism sector.

With millions of young Africans seeking employment, tourism was highlighted as one of the continent’s greatest opportunities for job creation. However, unlocking this potential will require stronger investment in education, professional training and creating tourism careers that young people actively aspire to pursue.

The Secretary General also announced new initiatives, including a Mentorship Programme for African Women and scholarships through the UN Tourism Online Academy, aimed at expanding leadership opportunities and improving access to tourism education for women, youth and rural communities.

Her message was clear. Sustainable tourism is built by people. By investing in talent, embracing innovation and empowering communities, Africa can unlock the full potential of its tourism industry and strengthen its position as a leading global destination.
