UNWTO and the World Committee on Tourism Ethics launch the UNWTO Ethics Award The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) and the World Committee on Tourism Ethics (WCTE) have launched the UNWTO Ethics Award. The Award will recognize companies committed to making their business more responsible and sustainable through the implementation of the Global Code of Ethics for Tourism. Quality Management key for the competitiveness of tourism destinations Quality management indicators and processes are key tools for the competitiveness of tourism destinations concluded the UNWTO Conference on Quality Management held last week in Bucharest, Romania. In that regard, participants to the conference called for an integrated approach to quality management as a priority in long-term strategic planning of Destination Management Organizations (DMOs) at national and sub-national levels. UNWTO and the Government of The Netherlands partner to foster religious tourism To promote the role of religious tourism as an agent for cultural preservation, peace and understanding is the focus of the agreement undersigned by UNWTO and the Government of The Netherlands. The partnership includes the celebration of a conference on ‘Religious Heritage and Tourism: How to increase religious heritage tourism in a changing society’” that will be held on October 2016, in Utrecht, The Netherlands. UNWTO and Astana EXPO 2017 partner to promote sustainable tourism Astana EXPO 2017 National Company and UNWTO will work together to promote sustainable tourism at the international exhibition which will be held in Astana in 2017 under the theme ‘Future Energy’. The partnership was signed on 13 June at UNWTO Headquarters in Madrid by UNWTO Secretary-General, Taleb Rifai and Akhmetzhan Yessimov, Chairman of Board for Astana EXPO 2017 National Company. Under the title ‘Advancing the Measurement of Sustainable Tourism Development’, UNWTO Member States, NGOs, academic institutions and other public and private sector entities discussed approaches to effectively measure, monitor and assess tourism performance and impacts at destination level. This consultative process takes place at a time in which the international tourism community embraces the Sustainable Development Goals. (Madrid, Spain, 7-8 June 2016).
Improving Visitor Facilities and Services in Nzulezu Stilt Village in Ghana In January 2016, UNWTO signed an agreement with the Korean Tourism Organization and the ST-EP Foundation for the implementation of a new ST-EP Project portfolio benefiting eight countries. Ghana is one of the countries featured in the portfolio and the project aims to improve visitor facilities and services in Nzulezu. Nzulezu is a village on stilts, situated on the bank of the Amanzure wetland in the Western Region of Ghana. The village has enormous cultural and ecotourism potential (canoeing, bird watching, fishing, cultural performances, among others) and attracts a good number of domestic and international tourists alike, but facilities and services that would encourage visitors to stay longer and spend more money are limited.
UNWTO Conference on Tourism: a Catalyst for Development, Peace and Reconciliation (11-14 July 2016, Passikudah, Sri Lanka)
UNWTO Recommendations on Accessible Information in Tourism 2016 Ensuring that information is accessible is key to communicating successfully with visitors in all stages of their journey, particularly with travelers with disabilities and special needs. The tourism sector stakeholders must deliver accurate, relevant and timely information to its customers, prior to, during and even after the journey. The UNWTO Recommendations on Accessible Information in Tourism have been developed with the support and collaboration of the ONCE Foundation for Cooperation and Social Inclusion of People with Disabilities and the European Network for Accessible Tourism (ENAT). They were adopted by the Resolution A/RES/669(XXI) of the General Assembly of UNWTO as a follow-up to the ‘Recommendations on Accessible Tourism for All’ of 2013.
27 September is World Tourism Day! Tourism for All, promoting universal accessibility! Ever since its inception, World Tourism Day is celebrated on 27 September to foster awareness among the international community of the importance of tourism and its social, cultural, political and economic value. As the official day set aside in the United Nations Calendar WTD highlights tourism’s contribution to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and its capacity to address some of the most pressing challenges society is faced with today. This year’s campaign focuses on Accessible Tourism – the right of every individual to enjoy barrier free travel around the globe. On this year’s World Tourism Day help us spread the word of both the importance and immense benefits universal accessibility has and can bring to society at large.
