Volcanoes Safaris, the pioneer of gorilla and chimpanzee ecotourism in Uganda and Rwanda since 1997, announces the opening of Kibale Lodge in Uganda on 01st of July 2024.

Bookings are now open!

Volcanoes’ fifth lodge is a landmark development as it creates a unique circuit linking the finest gorilla and chimpanzee tracking sites in Africa.

Kibale Lodge will comprise eight bandas, plus a spa and pool. Four bandas will open in July with four more by the end of the year. The lodge has been hand-built to a new level of elegance and luxury in the renowned Volcanoes style by an in-house design and build team of African artisans led by Ugandan-born founder, Praveen Moman.

Kibale Lodge sits on a ridge with stunning views of the Rwenzori Mountains.

The 150-acre site is surrounded by lush homesteads on the rolling hills around Fort Portal, known for its warm and welcoming climate.

Praveen Moman commented “We are delighted to be opening Kibale Lodge. There are three important things to share about this lodge. Firstly, as with our other lodges, it has been hand-built by our artisans. Secondly, we are honoured to be working with key partners to promote conservation and community activities. Finally, Kibale Forest – the Primate Capital of the World – is one of Africa’s best parks to view chimpanzees, with a community of over 1,500.”

ATCNews welcomes the opening of the new Kibale Lodge by Volcanoes Safaris as the first lodge in the location where claims to ecofriendliness and ‘Going Green – Staying Green’ match the reality on the ground.

Unlike in neighbouring Kenya, where the EcoTourism Society of Kenya on an annual basis awards Bronze, Silver and Gold standard certifications, can claims of ecofriendliness and green standards in Uganda be made without the challenge to submit to an independent audit to verify such claims, which are often made merely for marketing purposes and regularly fall into the ‘Greenwashing‘ category.
