Wildlife and Community News from Ol Pejeta

I have often described Ol Pejeta as one of Kenya’s most complete
wilderness experiences, with all of the Big Five found on one
conservancy just 3 and a bit hours drive from Nairobi. Enjoy the read!

Dear Friends of Ol Pejeta,
Earnotching exercise on Ol Pejeta
Successful ear notching for 29 rhinos
This month was a busy one for our veterinary team! We completed the ear notching of 25 black and 4 white rhinos.

What is ear notching you might ask? Each rhino has a unique ear pattern that correlates with its national identity number. This is useful for our monitoring rangers, who have to spot every rhino at least once every three days. Often, all they can see of a rhino in thick bush is his ears – so the patterns aid quick and unintrusive identification. It’s much easier to note an ear pattern than try and find more subtle defining characteristics.
