ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT ASSESSMENT UNDERWAY FOR A NEW BRIDGE ACROSS #MOMBASA’S LIKONI CHANNEL
(Posted 08th December 2017)
Relief is in sight now for long suffering residents of the island of Mombasa and the southern mainland after plans were confirmed yesterday that an environmental impact assessment study has been launched for a bridge crossing the port entrance at Likoni.
While presently five ferries are in service are they often breaking down regularly causing traffic chaos and long delays for commuters while periodically also leading to the stranding of tourists unable to reach their flights home from the international airport.
The bridge, said to be 1.4 kilometres long and up to 70 metres tall at the highest point, will according to information received from Mombasa cost over 80 billion Kenya Shillings and be co-financed through loans and grants from the Empire of Japan and the Kenyan government.
Other major infrastructure projects for Mombasa county presently underway are the construction of the Dongo Kundu bypass which will connect the Moi International Airport and the Nairobi to Mombasa highway directly to the south coast, thereby opening fast track road access to the resorts on Tiwi Beach, Diani Beach and beyond.
Also under construction is a new highway stretch linking the Changamwe area of Mombasa to the Nairobi highway, a source of almost constant traffic jams impacting on not just safaris to the two Tsavo parks and adjoining game reserves but also delaying the arrival and departure of passengers and goods to and from Kenya’s main port city.
Meanwhile is the Diani Beach Festival kicking off this Saturday, a three week extravaganza of activities including massive skydiving events which according to the organizers have attracted some 500 international participants.
Also taking place are other events like kite surfing, scuba diving, jet skiing, cycling, quad biking, deep sea fishing and yoga among other activities on offer for locals and resort guests during the festival duration.
The festival will run until the 01st of January 2018 and it the first such event staged at Diani.
