THE TOURISM SECTOR HAS EM-BRACED THE VACCINATION CALL BY HIS EXCELLENCY, CDE E.D MNANGAGWA BY ENCOURAG-
ING ITS EMPLOYEES TO GET VACCI-NATED.
Since the commencement of the vaccination programme, the sector has organized vaccination centres on its facilities such as hotels. Zimbabwe’s free and voluntary vaccination program aims to reach 10 million citizens and achieve herd immunity. Achieving herd immunity with safe and effective vaccines makes diseases more controllable and saves lives.
The sector has organized itself and used some of its facilities as vaccination centres and have seen substantial numbers of tourism and hospitality personnel being inoculated at these facilities.
In a move that was generally described as a confidence booster by many and also meant to promote tourism, the President flew to Victoria Falls towards the end of March where he received his first jab.
With the resort town being regarded
as Zimbabwe’s tourism hub, the target has been to inoculate every adult in the town. Waiters, waitresses, tour guides, drivers and many others are some of the frontline workers in the tourism industry and constitute a higher number of residents of the town.
“The tourism sector has been dormant for quite some time during the whole lockdown period, this has greatly affected a lot of operators. We are fully behind the immunization programme as you have seen here His Excellency receiving his first dose. Tourism employees are some of the many other front-line employees and it is ideal that they get inoculated”, said Zimbabwe Tourism Authority Acting Chief Executive, Mr. Givemore Chidzidzi after the President received his first jab in Victoria Falls.
More tourism employees were inoculated in Harare at Wilkins hospital, the Village Lodge in Gweru, Rainbow Towers, Cresta Lodge, Monomutapa Hotel (Crowne Plaza) and Carribea Bay.
According to the World Health Organization, to safely achieve herd immunity against COVID-19, a substantial proportion of a population would need to be vaccinated, lowering the overall amount of virus able to spread in the whole population. One of the aims with working towards herd immunity is to keep vulnerable groups who cannot get vaccinated (e.g. due to health conditions like allergic reactions to the vaccine) safe and protected from the disease.

RECOVERY EFFORTS THROUGH VIRTUAL MARKETING
DESTINATION ZIMBABWE, IN APRIL TOOK ITS MARKETING EXERTIONS VIRTUALLY TO WORLD TRAVEL MARKET AFRICA – THE MOST SOUGHT-AFTER BUSINESS TO BUSI-
NESS TRAVEL AND TOURISM SHOW FOR AFRICAN AND INTERNATIONAL TRAVEL PROFESSIONALS.
The virtual travel showcase went live from 7 – 9 April 2021, attracting 231 exhibitors and 220 buyers from 59 countries as well as hosting 3000 meetings with 170 speakers over 40 different topics. Activities lined up included interactive pre scheduled one on one meetings, speed networking, conference sessions and ad hoc meetings.
Participation at the virtual edition of the show was greatly beneficial in that it provided a platform to get an overview of the current state of tourism in the different source markets, discussions on new tourism recovery strategies, areas of cooperation, recruitment of potential buyers and media for Sanganai 2021.
The Zimbabwe Tourism Authority (ZTA) participated along with 5 local companies signing up. The World Travel Market (WTM) Africa comes at a time when the tourism industry has been ravaged by the COVID 19 pandemic which resulted in worldwide lockdowns giving rise to restricted movement and travel.
WTM Africa provided a re-engagement opportunity and managed to close the information gap that had been created by the effects of the pandemic.
The travel show strives to keep the travel and tourism momentum alive and ensure travel to Africa remains top in the minds of desired tourists.
The show successfully ran and set the pace for restarting tourism in Africa with main topics revolving around post-COVID 19 recovery strategies and preparedness. The Euromonitor’s panel sessions highlight that, “Tourism numbers are only expected to reach 2019 levels again by the end of 2022. Adapt, Innovate and Integrate is the way for tourism businesses to survive”. WTM Africa 2021 emanated at an opportune time when Zimbabwe is really looking at intensifying its marketing efforts in various source markets in the face of COVID 19. With the sector’s future appearing bleak, innovation and digitalization offer hope as greater opportunities have been realised; breaking the crisis that had paralysed the tourism industry. The virtual edition presented a platform for Destination Zimbabwe to exhibit and tell its beautiful story, showcasing its peculiar intriguing offers.
Of interest to note is the anticipated vaccination acceleration with the intention to reach herd immunity. With such an achievement, it will signal the restart and recovery of the tourism sector. Resultantly, the WTM Africa organisers are planning to host a live show in September 2021 in Capetown, South Africa.
Zimbabwe continues to participate in both virtual and physical shows in order to educate the markets and build confidence about travel to the country in the midst of COVID-19 pandemic. With such innovation and measures in place, the tourism industry recovery beckons.

TO COME BACK TO LIFE
Adecade ago, a catastrophic fire destroyed the much-cherished Old Bulawayo National Monument which is located approximately 15km South East of Bulawayo, along
Burnside Road into Old Bulawayo Road. Old Bulawayo was established by King Lobengula as his capital in 1870 after the death of his father King Mzilikazi in 1868. In 1881, after 11 years of occupation, Lobengula moved his capital to what is now the modern city of Bulawayo and ordered the destruction of the old settlement by fire though the site had been rescued before the fire in 2010.
Old Bulawayo is a significant development site of the Ndebele people and their rich culture, as the country celebrates its Rich History and Heritage.As part of its efforts to increase the tourism product base, the Zimbabwe Tourism Authority (ZTA) has partnered with the National Museums and Monuments in the reconstruction of the historical site.

ON CRESTA GRANDE
Southern African hospitality group Cresta Hotels has open a hotel in Cape Town, the first time the group has operated in South Africa’s internationally-popular ‘mother city.’
Cresta Hotels’ managing director Chipo Mandela said Cresta Grande was formally opened on Thursday April 15, aimed at leisure and business travellers in the four-star market.
The hotel is a 19-storey building in the Cape Town CBD, originally built as an office block in the late 1970s and situated on an historic street that was once the forefront of the city along the shore of Table Bay. In 2009 the office block was converted by owners The Leisure Group into The Strand Tower Hotel, and in 2011 it was rebranded Holiday Inn Cape Town after the group signed a management contract with International Hotels Group, owners of the Holiday Inn brand.
“We are excited about this development, which further enhances Cresta Hotels’ already-significant presence across Southern Africa,” said Ms Mandela.
Cresta is well-established in the southern African travel and tourism sector, already operating 16 other hotels in Botswana, Zimbabwe and Zambia.
Cresta has recently signed a management contract with Leisure Group and has rebranded the hotel as Cresta Grande. The hotel has 242 stylish bedrooms, a series of conference and banqueting rooms, a 24-hour café, bar and lounge, gymnasium, sauna and steam room, covered and access-controlled parking area and outdoor swimming pool with sundeck.
It is situated on the corner of Loop and Strand streets, close to the commercial centre of Cape Town, as well as a range of visitor attractions, including the world-famous V&A Waterfront. Strand Street was originally the first street of the city along the shoreline, but reclamation over the past century or so created the waterfront area further off.
“In addition to being close to so many commercial and tourist sites, Cresta Grande has superb views of Signal Hill, Table Mountain and across the city, and is not only conveniently sited but also uniquely placed to give both scenic enjoyment and convenience to guests,” said Ms Mandela.
The hotel is well-appointed, requiring very little refurbishment of amenities, and the main work has involved introducing new branding and systems. The general manager of the hotel is

“Cresta has been a name well-known in Botswana, Zimbabwe and Zambia for decades and will now be part of the South African travel and tourism scene, in one of the most popular tourist centres in the southern hemisphere,” said Ms Mandela, adding that the group now offered more than 1 500 rooms in its 17 properties.
“We believe Cresta Strand will be popular with visitors from across Southern Africa, as well as from the international market, with these international travellers being able to link with other Cresta properties in key tourist destinations such as Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe and the Okavango Delta in Botswana.”

Amulti-million-dollar refurbishment of one of Zimbabwe’s best-known hotels is nearing completion, as the Cresta Jameson nears the end of a two-year programme to fully upgrade this Harare landmark.
Work on the refurbishment started in 2019 and was delayed by national Covid-related lockdowns in 2020 and 2021, but the programme is now at an advanced stage and is scheduled for completion by mid-year.
Speaking at a media, travel trade and customer familiarisation morning, the hotel’s general manager, Ms Emily Mumba, said most bedroom floors had been revamped, while most public areas and background areas had received a makeover, with only top floors left to refurbish.
“Despite the many challenges and obstacles that face us at the present time, Cresta Hotels is an organisation founded on optimism, confidence and a strong belief in doing what is right not just for the short term but more especially for the longer term,” she said.
“We embarked on a US$2,5-million refurbishment more than 18 months ago and, despite the hurdle of the Covid-19 pandemic and all that ensued, we are now nearing completion of the project. “Within two or three months we will be hosting a re-launch event and we shall celebrate in great style and with great flair the rebirth of a genuine Harare landmark.”
She reminded guests that Cresta Jameson was an historic hotel, dating back to its opening in 1958. “It is a venue that is proud of its history and its tradition of service to the Harare community and to travellers from far and wide, who enjoy the ambience of a city centre hotel that is vibrant and exciting.
“Many of its service areas are equally famed, such as Tiffany’s restaurant, which we are re-opening after a period of closure, as well as the Sandawana restaurant, The Usual Place bar and our conferencing and banqueting rooms, which have hosted many great events over the years.”
The hotel was originally half its present size, but expansion came about in the 1970s and there were major refurbishments in the 1980s and 1990s. The latest refurbishment is aimed at a major upgrade of all facilities and amenities, ensuring what Ms Mumba said would be ‘a bright new look and a hotel that stands with the best.’
“It must be remembered that this was Zimbabwe’s first four-star hotel, a grading given before there were any four or five-star hotels in this country,” she said.
The refurbishment covers all bedrooms, all public areas, conference and banqueting rooms – such as the premier Zambezi Room – as well as restaurants, bar and the main kitchen, which has been given a total makeover.
“There are other technical and technological changes and additions, and we have prepared out staff for the times ahead when our guest numbers will rise, as we welcome back business and leisure travellers, and other guests coming to take advantage of all our services,” said Ms Mumba.
“Zimbabwe stands ready and waiting for this era of renewed travel and tourism and we look forward to the travel and tourism sector resuming its important economic role, and indeed to a hoped-for increase in this regard, to the point where perhaps travel and tourism can account for half of the national GDP, an ambition long called for by the Government and the leadership of the sector,” she said.
The familiarisation was attended by leading travel trade personalities, members of the media and top customers of the hotel.
Cresta Hotels operates five hotels in Zimbabwe, 11 in Botswana, one in Zambia and, most recently, has opened a hotel in Cape Town, South Africa.

• 2g crushed garlic • 30g breadcrumbs
• 5g mixed herbs • 10mls mukuyu wine
• 100g butter
Up to this day he has enjoyed sharing Zimbabwe’s dishes with many people around the world hence promoting Zim-babwean Gastronomy worldwide.
The beauty of Zimbabwean cuisine is that its organic, nutritious and contains a lot of medicinal properties, hence a well sort after delicacy.
STEP BY STEP
1 Boil the mopani delicacy in salted water until cooked and soft.
2 Dissect them and stuff with tossed and seasoned legumes.
3 Panfry in herbed butter until crispy and nice.
4 Meanwhile boil the samp in separate salted water until cooked.
5 Drain the water, let it cook briefly then add the egg and crumbs.
6 Correct the seasoning and shape in a small dariole mold.
7 Quick fry on both sides until golden brown.
8 Use it as a base for the presentation.
9 Meanwhile prepare the Mukuyu wine dressing toaccompany the dish.
10 Present and serve.

The launch of a daily air service by Mack Air, a Botswana registered airline, between Kasane and Victoria Falls becomes the latest addition to the assortment of airlines tapping into the Victoria Falls market, which is at this point is the safest holiday destination in the SADC region with an 80% COVID -19
vaccination rate.
Victoria Falls International Airport infrastructure was developed in line with the Airports Company of Zimbabwe (Private) Limited’s vision of developing the airport into the Southern Africa Regional Tourism Hub. This introduction of daily scheduled flight services between Victoria Falls and Kasane, will not only initiate a seamless air bridge between key tourism frontiers in Zimbabwe and Botswana, but will also further enhance the attractiveness of Victoria Falls as a regional hub for the Kavango-Zambezi (KAZA) Trans Frontier Region.
The flight is going to enhance local connectivity from Kasane via Victoria Falls onto other Zimbabwean based domestic charter and scheduled flights and is good for the development of domestic tourism.
Air connectivity is crucial in the expansion of tourism offerings to visitors from the region and beyond.
The story of Zimbabwe’s newest city and Southern Africa’s Tourist capital, Victoria Falls, continues to be told far and wide. The introduction of air services by Mack Air is a bold endorsement of the Government’s ease of doing business and promotion of investment into the country. It is also fitting in very well with the drive for the recovery of air travel in the wake of the COVID-19 global pandemic. This is also in line with the currently running Zimbabwe Destination Development Programme targeting the Victoria Falls as well as the Air Service Development Programme being spearheaded by the Airports Company of Zimbabwe (Private) Limited with support from the World Bank through the International Finance Corporation.
The Airports Company of Zimbabwe (Private) Limited will continue to work tirelessly to attract more airlines into the country for the development of tourism and trade in line with the National Development Strategy 1 and Vision 2030.

CHIPINGE IS ZIMBHO
CHIPINGE District is one of the seven districts in Manicaland Province and is situated in the extreme south of the province.
The district borders with Mozambique in the east, Chimanimani district in the north, with the Save River constituting its western as well as southern boundary where it borders with Buhera and Bikita
districts in the west, and Chiredzi district in the south. Chipinge covers an area of approximately 5 393 square kilometres, with 30 administrative wards. The district is blessed with all five agricultural Natural Farming Regions; the northern part consisting mostly of Natural Farming Regions 1-3 and the southern part Natural Farming Region 4 and 5.
The district is pre-dominantly occupied by the Ndau people under Chiefs Mutema, Mapungwana, Gwenzi, Musikavanhu and Garahwa. There are also minority groups in Chipinge South comprising of the Tsonga/ Xangani people under Chief Mahenye and Ndwandwe/ Nguni people under Chief Mupungu.
Chipinge town is approximately 465km from Zimbabwe’s capital city of Harare via Mutare and is about 188km from Mutare. It is also 48km from Mt Selinda border post. Chipinge is endowed with vast natural and man-made resources that can easily interest the domestic tourist.
CHIRINDA FOREST
Chirinda Forest is about 32km from Chipinge town at Mount Selinda under Chief Mapungwana. The forest is the country’s biggest and tranquil natural jungle with a lot of flora and fauna is found.
The forest is home to The Big Tree, a 57m tall Redwood tree (Khaya anthotheca) whose estimated aged is above 1 000 years and has trunk diameter of 4,5m. The tree’s height used to be 65m before it was hit by lightning and reduced to 57m. The Big Tree is rated as Southern Africa’s largest tree and Africa’s second biggest shrub and is the main attraction of Chirinda Forest.
Chirinda Forest is also known as the Valley of the Giants where three distinct large trees named,” The Three Sisters” stood. Unfortunately, one of the triplets fell down leaving only two of the sisters standing.
Accommodation is available at Chirinda Forest but visitors are encouraged to bring their own food, water and adequate fuel when they opt to tour Chirinda Forest.

CHIBASANE FALLS
There are seven Chibasane Falls along Changazi
River about a kilometre from Derera Business Centre
in Ngaone about 70km from Chipinge town.
The smallest of the Chibasane Falls measures 40m
high and the largest measuring 150m. There is a
gorge which is decorated by beauty flora.
A visitor to Chibasane Falls should carry own fuel,
water, food and arrange own accommodation if one
decides to make an overnight stay.
CHIPINGE SAFARI AREA
Chipinge Safari Area is a protected area found about 65km from Chipinge town along the Ngundu-Tanganda Highway at the 29km peg from Tanganda Halt.
The area has several wild animals which include but not limited to the black rhinos and leopards. By chance, one can meet a lion although the cats are not resident in the park.
A visitor to the protected area can find food and fuel at Chipangayi but should make own accommodation arrangement if one needs overnight stay.
MUSIRIZWI FALLS
Musirizwi Falls on Musirizwi River is near Grassflats about 24km along the Mt Selinda road. The feature is just 3km off the Mt Selinda road. The feature is sight soothing when one experiences sounds from the falls which get sweetened by music from birds.
A visitor to Musirizwi has to carry own food, fuel and arrange own accommodation if one decides to spend the night in Chipinge.

MPHUNGURA ANCIENT WALLS

Mphungura Ancient Walls are located about 60km from Chipinge town using the Chipinge-Tuzuka route. They are found at a place called Masvingo under Chief Musikavanhu which is between Chikore and Tuzuka to be precise.
The name Masvingo could have been derived from the popular Great Zimbabwe Ruins in Masvingo which are affectionately known as Masvingo eZimbabwe.
There is a similarity in the construction of Mphungura Ancient Walls and that of Great Zimbabwe Ruins in Masvingo. Both were built without the application of mortar although Mphungura is smaller in area and size. That is why some people call it the “Little Zimbabwe.”
A visitor to Mphungura Ancient Walls should arrange own water, fuel and food since there are no services that provide such. Mphungura Ancient Walls is under management of Ndau Festival of the Arts trust.

PAIYAPO HERITAGE AND ARTS DEVELOPMENT CENTRE
Paiyapo Heritage and Arts Development Centre is the home of cultural tourism in Chipinge East. The place is owned by Ndau Festival of the Arts (NDAFA) and is where NDAFA galas take place.
Situated about 45km from Chipinge town, the area is in Bangira village under Chief Musikavanhu. Paiyapo measures a hectare in size. There is a women’s museum where fine artist Edwin Hlatswayo exhibits his drawings on women themes.
A visitor to Paiyapo Heritage and Arts Development Centre expects to experience a package of Ndau culture from dances, food, beverages and traditional conservation methods.

BIRCHENOUGH BRIDGE
Birchenough Bridge is a world renowned arch suspension bridge which was completed in 1935 and was designed by Ralph Freeman who designed Sydney Harbour Bridge in Australia.
The bridge is 329m long and the third longest single arch suspension bridge in the world by the 2000s. Birchenough Bridge was built on Save River at Mawunganidze Growth Point and is the pride of Chipinge West.
The architectural design is about 58km from Chipinge town and approximately 123km from Mutare.
RUPISE HOT SPRINGS
Rupise Hot Spring is found in Middle Sabi outside Chipinge Safari Area about 72km from Chipinge town. It is 36km from Tanganda Halt along the Ngundu-Tanganda Highway.
The area is not really known and there is no infrastructure at the hot spring but it is worth seeing. A visitor to the protected area can find food and fuel at Chipangayi but should make own accommodation arrangements if one needs overnight stay.

PROMOTING HIKING IN ZIMBABWE
Staying fit and healthy is more and more challenging in our increasingly URBAN world but we need to look no further than Zimbabwe for a massive untapped resource in the Eastern Highlands. This area has been described
over and over again, by international visitors as “A world class hiking destination.”
Tourism operators are now promoting guided walking and hik-ing both locally and internationally.

One of the initiatives is called THE BIG FIVE TRAILS with hiking trails along the lines of the Camino de Santiago, Pennine Way, The Appalachian Trail and the Otter Trail that folk can take up their fitness challenge in Nyanga, Bvumba or Chimanimani as well as from the lowest point of Zimbabwe to the highest and back (Blue Cross and BIGZIM.) The MBIRA TRAIL in Chimanimani is one of the BIG FIVE. The idea is that whenever people take to the trail, the guide would carry an instrument such as the Mbira, or a Mbira player would be invited as part of the tour group. This would also be part of the promotion of local music and culture thus, a unique combination of local Zimbabwean music played in and along the Mountain trail.
Hikers who embark on the Mbira Trail can request to meet local musicians at their place of accommodation, learn the history of the Mbira and delve into the local music scene, meeting with and jamming with local musicians if they wish. The five day Mbira Trail covers 50km of rugged mountain terrain from the Northern end of the Chimanimani National Park at Chikukwa to Tilbury in the South. Hikers can attempt portions of the Trail (1, 2 or 3 days) or take the full challenge. Peza Mountain (once known as Ben Nevis) is the first of the big Peaks and for the fittest of hikers Binga, Mozambique’s highest mountain is also an option. Rough camping, swimming in crystal clear waterfalls and sleeping in Caves along the way, hikers loop in and out of Zimbabwe and Mozambique in this spectacular Transfrontier Peace Park. This park is home to the highest concentration of endemic plant species in Southern Africa. The Mbira Trail provides a momentous challenge in one of the earth’s true Biological hotspots. Hikers will be rewarded with views of unsurpassed splendour stretching to the horizon in Africa’s finest mountain wilderness.
