The European Commission has updated the EU Air Safety List, reducing the number of banned airlines from 169 to 154, while adding Air Express Algeria due to serious safety deficiencies identified by EU aviation experts. Beyond the blacklist update, several key developments shaped aviation across the continent this week.
1 AFRICA hosted the 2026 AviaDev Africa conference in Gaborone, BOTSWANA, bringing together over 450 delegates to advance discussions on air connectivity, route development, and aviation–tourism collaboration. ZAMBIA will host the next edition from 9–11 June 2027.
2 Max Air Ltd, a Nigerian carrier, grounded all domestic operations after the Aviation Ground Handlers Association of Nigeria (AGHAN) suspended services over unpaid debts estimated at about ?1 billion.
3 RwandAir Ltd signed a codeshare and interline partnership with EGYPTAIR improve connectivity via Kigali across key international routes.
4 UGANDA finalized a landmark agreement with Boeing for 10 new passenger aircraft worth about US$980 million, supporting Uganda Airlines’ long-term expansion strategy.
5 Air Cairo launched its first direct flight between Porto, PORTUGAL, and New Alamein International Airport, alongside a new direct service between Alexandria (Borg El Arab) and Riyadh, SAUDI_ARABIA, further strengthening its expanding regional and international network.
6 KENYA awarded a $2.9 billion contract to China Communications Construction Company (CCCC) to upgrade and expand Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), following the cancellation of the proposed Adani concession due to governance and legal concerns.
