The COVID-19 pandemic severely impacted air travel in every region of the world.
In Africa, the Airports Council International has estimated that passenger traffic in 2020 was around two-thirds below its 2019 baseline, with a similar reduction in airport revenues.
With global passenger traffic expected to return to pre-pandemic levels in 2024, airports are working hard to recover and are considering how to better prepare themselves for future shocks to the system.
Diversifying revenues is often mentioned in this context and can play an important part in building resilience. In the attached report you can read about ways in which airports can diversify their income and reduce their reliance on passenger traffic.
