DRAINAGE WORKS TO AVOID FUTURE FLOODING OF AIRPORT INSTALLATIONS

Following repeated flooding of sections of Bujumbura’s international airport (IATA: BJM / ICAO HBBA) in the past has work finally started last week to improve drainage around the airport area. Located at an elevation of 787 metres above sea level does the airport have a single 3.600 metre long runway.
The Mutimbuzi river had last flooded in April, making access to the airport and work there difficult but also impacting on the population living near the airport.
The project, due to last at least a month, will dig additional drainage channels, enough to drain water after seasonal heavy rains.
Bujumbura is presently served by #BrusselsAirlines once a week with an Airbus A330 service enroute to Entebbe but also has regular connections from Nairobi and with Ethiopian Airlines from Addis Ababa.
