Call for applications – Female Tour Guide Program by Matoke Tours & Ukarimu Academy

Are you an aspiring tour guide, ready to boost your career and take your guiding skills to another level? Apply for our 5-month training and internship program for women.

In 2021, Ukarimu Academy and Matoke Tours Africa joined forces to develop a female-only tour guide training & mentored internship program for Ugandan women who wish to pursue a career in tour guiding.

In October last year, the first group of Female Tour Guides Trainees started the program and 12 women successfully graduated in March 2022.

Due to its success, we proudly announce that Ukarimy Academy and Matoke Tours Africa are set to induct the second cohort of Female Tour Guide Trainees. This program will run from 15th May 2022 until October 2022.

If you are an aspiring female tour guide, here is what this program offers you :

The training consists out of 4 weeks intense theoretical training with a focus on developing the perfect tour guide skill-set, ranging from customer service and product knowledge to vehicle mechanics and bush first aid. After the theoretical training, you will participate in a 1-week practical field training followed by a mentored internship program over the course of 3 months, working together with seasoned tour guides and tour operators in Uganda allowing you the chance to practice your skills, network, and to establish yourself in the field as a professional tour guide.

After the mentored internship an assessment shall follow to rate your skills and to provide you with professional feedback that will help you to determine the next steps of your career. This program shall be finalised with an official graduation.

Participants will:

  • Receive high-quality, intense training and career advice from various experts
  • Participate in a training that is tailor-made for women
  • Build relevant work experience
  • Get the chance to build a network with like minded professionals

The schedule for the training program is as followed:

  • 15th May – 10th June : Class based training in Kampala (Matoke Tours Office)
  • 11th June – 15th June : Exposure field trip
  • 1st July – 30th September : Internship / Work-based learning
  • 3rd October – 7th October : Closure training, assessment
  • 8th October (tentative date) : Graduation

Commitment fee:

Every selected participant will have to pay a non-refundable commitment fee of 150.000 UGX. The payment of the fee shall be due before the start of the Exposure Field trip on 11th June 2022.

The training will start on the 15th of May 2022 and will end in October 2022. Apart from the commitment fee, the training is free and accommodation and meals during the class-based training will be covered. Transport to and from the training location in Kampala is covered with a set weekly compensation. If you apply for this training, we expect that you will be able to fully commit yourself to the entire training program. This means that participants will be expected to attend every day of the training. There are limited slots available.
