Championship golf comes to Lake Victoria’s shores in Uganda

FIRST NINE HOLES OPEN AT UGANDA’S LATEST CHAMPIONSHIP GOLF COURSE

(Posted 30th July 2015)

The Lake Victoria Serena Resort & Spa has now soft opened the first nine holes of their 18 hole championship golf course, which was designed by Golf Plan USA to the exacting standards of the US Professional Golf Association.

The course, which hugs the shores of Lake Victoria, is expected to be a shot in the arm for Uganda’s sports tourism, as, together with the award winning Mediterranean styled resort, golfers from the region and beyond are now expected to come to Uganda to participate in golf tournaments, play as members or else as guests when spending time at the resort.

Serena Hotels, which manages the resort, are said to be embarking on a major marketing campaign for the resort and the golf course, which is the first such combined development for the hotel group.

Located some 15 kilometers outside Kampala is the turn off to the resort close to one of two access routes of the now under construction new dual carriage toll highway to Entebbe’s International Airport, offering excellent connectivity when the new road is completed in 2017.

In addition to the course’s nine holes has the club house also opened, offering a fully stocked Pro-Shop, locker rooms, restaurants and a club lounge. These facilities are available for guests staying at the Lake Victoria Serena, club members and visiting golfers. The club house adjoins the resort’s marina, which when complete will offer an all in one resort experience never seen on Lake Victoria’s shores before.

This is the first such professional golf course which has been created in Uganda. In the past have others tried their hand to develop courses but failed to appreciate the need for top level design quality and professional course development, letting down those of Uganda’s golfers who had high hopes only to see them dashed. Cutting corners and trying to do it on the cheap made them fail while the multimillion US Dollar investment at the Lake Victoria Serena will no doubt create a major added sporting attraction not just for Serena but for the country as a whole. It is expected that weekend and midweek packages will be launched soon by the hotel group for golfing and for water sports, including regular golf tournaments and sailing regattas.
