Afrika’s
baby
boy a
bouncing joy
Since his birth, Afrika’s baby boy
has been a centre of our attention
at the sanctuary. ‘He was very
fragile from the circumstances of
his birth, so we had to keep a close
eye on him and nurse him to health,
‘ Innocent Ampeire the Manager in
charge of Animal Welfare says.
Well, he’s now been given a clean
bill of health by the sanctuary
veterinarian; the cast on his arm
was removed, wounds healed, his
hair is growing steadily and appetite
very good. It is interesting to
observe the progress of his growth
and Betty his caretaker gives you
some interesting observations
noted on change of behaviour..
Fred Kasungwa, a Private Forest
Owner (PFOs) was grinning from
ear to ear after he received payment
for his 21 litre harvest of honey
reaped from just two hives in a
forest patch behind his house. Fred
is a beneficiary from a training and
support for a bee keeping enterprise
done last year under the Payment
for Ecosystem services.
As part of the benefits of Payment
for Ecosystem Services (PES) for
the PFOs who enrolled, farmers
have been trained and offered
options to increase their benefits,
boost their incomes and ultimately
reduce on the pressure on the
natural forest habitats. In partnership
with Malaika honey, we have
trained 33 PFOs and given inputs
to 5 of these as a pilot to kick-start
bee keeping enterprises in their
homes.
‘We now need resources to support
28 PFOs in 2015,’ says Project
Manager, Paul Hatanga. ‘Our aim
is
to support 300 house holds in 3
years and sell this honey to
international markets.’
