Classic Safari Rally – 9 months and counting

EAST AFRICAN SAFARI CLASSIC RALLY 2015 – EARLY NOTICE FOR MOTOR SPORT FANS (Posted 18th February 2015) November may for many be a long way off but when it comes to the planning of a major sporting event like the Kenya Airways sponsored East African Safari Classic Rally there never does seem to be enough time before the first competitors are flagged off the ramp. Already are seven bulletins available for participants and a new Chief Scrutineer has been appointed too. The man in question is a Mr. Geoff Doe who is currently the series scrutineer for the UK Motor Sports Association Asphalt Challenge and has over forty years of experience as a rally competitor, racecar preparer and rally scrutineer. Upon his appointment was Geoff quoted to have said: ‘I’m really looking forward to my new challenge as Chief Scrutineer on the East African Safari Classic. It is this rally that has always fascinated me and now I am going to be part of it’. Although the Safari Rally is at the moment not part of the annual World Championship circuit have many rally enthusiasts more than welcomed the initiative by Mike Kirkland – a repeat runner up in the glory days of the event – and other likeminded individuals and the bi-annual rally continues to draw in the big names of yesteryear, and of course their fancied cars which they competed in decades ago. Spectators along the route, which continues to include sections in Tanzania – but not Uganda where the first ever such rally ran into a multitude of problems which resulted in being cut out from all events since – are still able to see what once made the Safari Rally the greatest challenge in the World Championship, often seeing the local boys take the trophy home over the fancied championship leaders. Kenya Airways once again attached its name to the event and will as in past years be the main corporate sponsor of the Classic Safari. Motoring enthusiasts are able to book a Kenya / Tanzania safari along the main route and there are many qualified tour operators, including Mike Kirkland’s own safari company, which will be more than happy to organize a trip which will cover the rally from start to finish with added time thereafter along the beaches of Mombasa.
