After taking delivery of its 108th Airbus A380 yesterday – Emirates have a further 54 of these giant aircraft on order – was it also learned that the airline has upped capacity on the route to Johannesburg.
Two of the four daily services between Dubai International and Johannesburg are now operated by Airbus A380 while the other two services use a Boeing B777-300ER aircraft.
All four flights are operated in code share with South African Airways which wisely stepped aside and left the route to Emirates to operate and simply sell seats for the flights.
The move triggers a major capacity increase on the route, thought to be close to 14 percent, as a result of sustained demand for travel in both directions.
The A380 is presently configured in a three class layout of First, Business and Economy with 519 seats in total though there is speculation that Emirates may sooner rather than later launch its own version of a Premium Economy cabin.
