Former Safaricom CEO joins Kenya Airways Board of Directors

JOSEPH’S LEADERSHIP EXPERIENCE THOUGHT TO BE A BOOST FOR THE KENYA AIRWAYS BOARD

(Posted 30th September 2016)

Kenya Airways’ Annual General Meeting of the airline’s shareholders, among several other agenda items, had to elect three new directors to the board following the retirement of incumbents.
Among the nominees the AGM participants were to vote for was former Safaricom CEO Michael Joseph, who, though apparently not present in person, was elected with the required number of votes to join the Board of Directors as of its next schedule meeting.
Joseph made a name for himself as founder CEO of what has become Kenya’s leading telecommunications and mobile money company before he stepped down several years ago. He, now 70 years old, is closely linked to Safaricom’s major shareholder Vodafone and his professional experience is expected to enrich the deliberations of the Board of Kenya Airways considerably.
For a rather brief period he was also Chairman of the Kenya Tourism Board before in an unexpected move only months into his three year term he resigned for what was at the time cited as personal reasons.
Meanwhile has the Board’s Chairman Ambassador Dennis Awori, who took office a year ago, told shareholders that ‘Operation Pride‘ is on course to realize major financial gains during the current financial year after streamlining the fleet, making operational savings and expanding into the African market which is growing fast.
