IATA – Endangered Species Day prompts special message

(Posted 17th May 2026)

Endangered Species Day: is a moment to spotlight the action needed to protect wildlife.

Transnational criminal groups exploit global transport networks to traffic illegal flora and fauna, in a trade estimated to be worth up to USD 20 billion a year (excluding timber and fisheries).

While law enforcement leads on arrests and prosecutions, airlines and their staff can be an important source of intelligence—helping identify and report suspicious passenger behavior and unusual shipments.

IATA supports airlines with awareness-raising while works with partners across the sector to help disrupt wildlife trafficking.
