80 and counting as yet another Ebola outbreak in Congo DR takes its toll

Yet another Ebola outbreak in Eastern Congo has as of yesterday already claimed 80 lives, prompting the World Health Organization to declare a medical emergency in order to warn neighbouring countries to step up surveillance and containment measures.

In fact, one person, thought to have entered Uganda from Congo, has died inside Uganda where local and national health authorities have already swung into action to identify any contacts the deceased may have had after entering the country.

For Uganda the situation is unpleasant is as far as several national parks, frequented by tourists, are located near and along the border with Congo DR, such as Queen Elizabeth National Park, the Kyambura Game Reserve, the Rwenzori Mountain National Park, Semliki National Park and Semliki Game Reserve.

All countries with borders to Eastern Congo have put their health departments on alert and the monitoring of arriving passengers at airports, but also on land borders, have been decisively increased to ty and identify infected people and put them into quarantine.

The latest outbreak has been identified of being the Bundibugya virus which reportedly has not been used to create vaccines, making treatment almost impossible and thereby sharply increasing the danger of further spread and victims.
