Nigerian Billionaire Aliko Dangote is making another massive bet on Africa — this time in East Africa and in particular in Kenya, which country he chose over Tanzania for a multi billion US Dollar investment at the port of Lamu.

But the interesting part is not simply the refinery. It is the industrial ecosystem built around it.

The proposed integrated complex is expected to include:

•  700000 bpdoil refinery at final stage
• 1000 MW power plant, with 500 MW allocated to Kenya’s national grid
• Plastics manufacturing
• Chemical and fertiliser production
• Up to 60000 construction jobs
• An estimated 1 million tons of cement required for construction
• 450 million US Dollars project management contract awarded to Engineers India Limited
• Up to 30 percent equity potentially offered to East African governments

The target completion is 2030

This is what makes the Lamu project particularly interesting from an investment perspective.

The refinery alone is not the sole investment but the industrial ecosystem around the refinery is

Energy – Petrochemicals – Plastics – Chemicals – Fertiliser – Logistics – Manufacturing – Infrastructure.
