Mozambican Airlines, in short known as LAM, stopped flights two weeks ago to Tete, Manica and Inhambane. The national airlines of Mozambique has currently no plans to resume flights into these regions, anytime soon and no valid reasons could be obtained for the abrupt halt to flights.
The lack of flights to Inhambane and Vilankulo is now threatening the very survival of a once viable tourism industry in these parts to Mozambique and hotel, resort and restaurant operators are desperately counting their losses and are trying to figure out how to survive the sudden drought of visitors.
Tourists left stranded had to undertake a long arduous road journey to Maputo and anyone still wanting to visit is again compelled to either charter an aircraft, not financially viable for most, or else rent a car and do self drive or else use busses, not a fancied mode of transport for most tourists.
The move left the country’s fledgling tourism industry struggling for words as the government has named tourism as a priority sector but such actions as just sprung on the resorts and hotels of Inhambane and Vilankulo speak a very different language.
