Ewaso Lions Team Summits Mt Kenya for Lions

We did it! Our team reached the top of Mt Kenya, after months of preparation and three days of long trekking. And we are pleased to say we are on track to reach our campaign goal of raising $20,000 for lion conservation by February 1st.

The climb was a huge accomplishment for our group of 18. This was a physical and mental feat, as the cold climate and high altitude caused some to get altitude sickness. Nevertheless, we made it and had an unforgettable adventure in the process.

We made a video of the highlights from the trip!

Perhaps most importantly, we leveraged the climb to raise important funds for our conservation programmes to ensure safe areas in northern Kenya for people and lions to co-exist. And with your help, we raised awareness of lion conservation around the world.

We are deeply thankful to everyone who supported us throughout the expedition. If you haven’t yet donated, please help us reach our goal. At the time of writing, we are 96% there!

A new unidentified male lion has appeared suddenly in our area and could potentially take over as the dominant male. For the past three years, Lguret has held the territory in our Samburu study area. But this younger, fitter male may challenge him and take his place. Will the two battle it out?

The arrival of new cubs is always cause for celebration. The two cubs were born in early October. This is Nabulu’s third set of cubs. Jeneria captured this great photo as the mother carefully moved one of the cubs from one hiding spot to the next. We will continue to monitor Nabulu and her little ones.

Laikipia ranchers have designed a new steel boma (coral) system to protect livestock from lions and other carnivores. After lions repeatedly attacked lions in one particular area, we stepped in to help install two bomas. Since then, the ranch has not lost any cattle to lions at these bomas, and the lions were spared. The boma was funded by National Geographic’s Build A Boma initiative and implemented in partnership with Lion Landscapes.

In December, we took the Mama Simba ladies on two safaris in Samburu National Reserve. Both were led by our Mama Simba Coordinators. The women saw hundreds of elephants. Munteli took the lead to track lions and successfully found them. It was the first time she has done this herself!
