New Ebola case reported in Uganda as outbreak in Congo extends further

Uganda is facing a setback in the fight against Ebola, as another case of the disease was confirmed yesterday. The last such confirmation dates back to the 06th of June, a sign how difficult is has been to trace contact persons of individuals found infected.

Unlike in neighbouring Congo, where the disease has spread into refugee camps for displaced people and where case numbers have risen sharply in recent days, has Uganda shown a high level of success in fighting the outbreak with ‘only’ two deaths but 14 recoveries and only four current admissions of patients.

However, the countdown towards being declared Ebola free has reset with the new case and will start afresh, prolonging the agony for the tourism industry, business in general and for travelers into and out of the country, which presently have to undergo added bureaucracy and health checks. At the same time remain entry restrictions by a number of countries against Congo, Uganda and South Sudan in place, which will only be lifted once the outbreak in the respective country(ies) has been declared officially over. That time frame is 42 days, i.e. 6 weeks since the last reported case was found.
