New hotel projects in Nairobi show medium and long term market confidence

CITY LODGE AIMS FOR SECOND NAIROBI HOTEL

(Posted 19th August 2014)

After recently completing the full acquisition of the Fairview Hotel in Nairobi, following the approval by the Kenyan competition watchdog, has City Lodge now announced plans to open a second hotel in Nairobi’s suburb of Runda, near the main UN complex.

The new hotel will be purpose build, unlike the acquisition of the Fairview, and construction is due to start early next year. The proposed new three star hotel is expected to be ready for opening by late 2016 and will offer some 170 suites and rooms.

The hotel group is according to information sourced also considering additional hotel developments in Dar es Salaam and in Kampala though neither a time frame nor details on the star rating or size of those proposed projects could be obtained.

The announcement is seen as a shot in the arm for Kenya’s market confidence after months of challenges for the hospitality industry and gives a glimmer of hope that the tourism fortunes of the country will take a turn to the better in coming years again.
