REUNION’S ‘SAGA DU RHUM’ GAINS RECOGNITION FOR OFFERING TOURS FOR PHYSICALLY CHALLENGED VISITORS

(Posted 15th February 2014)

One of Reunion’s most visited museums, the one and only Saga du Rhum, where the history of the island’s sugar cane plantations and the making of rum is showcased, has just been recognized by the 4th edition of the Accessibility Awards in the category of Tourism & Handicap.

The award recognizes the extraordinary efforts made by the museum to make visits user friendly for any person with physical challenges, catering for all four disabilities. It is the first time that such an award has been bestowed on any tourism attraction on the island of Reunion, allowing Saga du Rhum to now compete for the French national awards to be held later this year.

Based in Saint-Pierre within the confines of distillery Isautier, the oldest family distillery on the island founded in 1845, the Saga du Rhum is the only museum dedicated to showcasing the making of Reunion’s rum.

Combining different approaches – historical, cultural, technical and sensory – the Saga du Rhum presents a traditional heritage and production closely linked to the history of the island and its inhabitants and no visit to Reunion is complete without a visit to the museum.

Meanwhile it was also learned that a regular visitor to Reunion, renowned sportsman Kilian Journet, has been named as National Geographic’s Adventurer of the Year for his exploits around the world. Kilian has in the past repeatedly competed in Reunion’s Le Grand Raid, a 164 kilometres long ultra trail across the rugged interior of the island, which this year will be run for the 22nd time between the 23rd and 26th of October. Kilian won the race twice in 2010 and 2012 and his new title will no doubt be another reason for many to come to the island and compete against the best of the best. More information about this even can be found via www.grandraid-reunion.com and registration will open on February 17th via the website.
